Grades Four, Five and Six – The Upper Grades:

The students in the fourth through sixth grades are in a position to apply and expand on previously learned and mastered concepts.  These older students encounter a wide range of reading materials and genres.  The ultimate goal is to produce students who read fluently and fully comprehend a wide range of reading materials utilizing many types of reading strategies.  They continue to develop and refine communication skills in our language arts program.  The students practice writing and speaking skills throughout the curriculum areas.  Students demonstrate and develop proficiency through different forms of written and oral expression, such as, book projects, drama, and presentations.

Everyday Math continues to be utilized by our older students as they grow and develop mathematical thinking skills necessary for success in everyday life.  Our program also provides a solid foundation for the advanced study of mathematics.  Students are encouraged to explore and move beyond traditional arithmetic.

The Social Studies curriculum for our upper grade students emphasizes history, culture, geography, and economics.  Students understand they are citizens of our country as well as the world and they develop an appreciation and knowledge of the history of our nation as we all as ancient civilizations.  Students also acquire an awareness of current events affecting our world and our country.  Additionally, the curriculum integrates historical novels with social studies content areas.
