Grades Two and Three:
The students in second and third grades begin to explore more challenging and exciting learning opportunities. The goal is to take each child further in his or her desire and ability to become a more capable and enthusiastic reader. Children learn various literary styles as they become more proficient in reading, speaking, and understanding the written word. Language and vocabulary develop further as these students encounter rich literature and apply new skills to their written word.
Everyday Math continues into these grades as students come to understand mathematical operations and problem solving. Students continue to use manipulatives, math journals, worksheets, and math extensions which allow students to explore and grow at their own pace.
The Social Studies program integrates children’s literature that is pertinent to the themes covered. Children begin to first develop an awareness of self in relation to their larger family and community and in third grade they begin to understand history and their relationship to the country and world around them.
