Somers, CT – September 21, 2007- The Grammar School at Somersville in Somers, CT participated in an International art and literacy project called “Pinwheels for Peace”. The students of The Grammar School created pinwheels in all shapes and sizes with messages of peace written on the fans. The “planting” of the pinwheels took place on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 8:30am with a special celebration. As part of the ceremony, the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance followed by observing a moment of silence as an opportunity to reflect on peace in our world.
In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. Pinwheels for Peace is an art project started as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. Last year, over 1 million pinwheels were spinning in over 2,350 locations including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, South America and the Middle East. Locally, The Grammar School at Somersville joined the project. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: “a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.”
